Our science

We do not ask you to take our word for it. Every product we offer is grounded in published research and clinically studied technology. This page explains the science behind what we sell and why we believe in it.

THE TECHNOLOGY

Our current range focuses on light-based wellness technology, specifically devices that use targeted wavelengths of light to support the body's natural processes. This field of science is known as photobiomodulation, and it has been the subject of thousands of peer-reviewed studies over the past three decades.

The principle is straightforward. Specific wavelengths of light, particularly in the red (620–700nm) and near-infrared (700–1100nm) spectrum, are absorbed by cells in the body. This absorption may stimulate cellular energy production, support circulation, and encourage the body's natural repair processes.

This is not new or experimental technology. It has been used in clinical and dermatological settings for years. What has changed is that advances in LED technology now make it possible to bring these same wavelengths into well-designed, home-use devices at a fraction of the cost of clinic treatments.

WHAT THE RESEARCH SAYS

The body of research on photobiomodulation is extensive. Studies have explored its potential applications across a range of areas, including:

Skin health — research has examined how red light wavelengths may support collagen production and skin appearance. Multiple studies have reported positive outcomes in skin texture, fine lines, and overall complexion.

Hair and scalp — clinical trials have investigated the use of red and near-infrared light for supporting hair density and scalp health. Several peer-reviewed studies have shown encouraging results, particularly for those experiencing thinning hair.

Recovery and wellbeing — research has explored how light therapy may support muscle recovery, reduce discomfort after exercise, and promote general wellbeing.

We encourage you to explore the published research yourself. A good starting point is the PubMed database (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov), where you can search for "photobiomodulation" or "low-level light therapy" to review the available studies.

WHAT WE DO NOT CLAIM

We believe in being transparent about both the strengths and the limitations of this technology.

Our products are wellness devices, not medical devices. They are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or medical condition. If you have a medical concern, please consult a qualified healthcare professional.

While the research is promising and growing, individual results vary. We will never guarantee specific outcomes, because that would not be honest. What we can say is that the technology behind our products is supported by a credible body of scientific literature, and that we only select devices that use clinically studied wavelengths and appropriate energy output levels.

HOW WE SELECT OUR DEVICES

Not all light therapy devices are equal. Many products on the market use incorrect wavelengths, insufficient power density, or poor-quality LEDs that degrade quickly. This is why our selection process is rigorous.

When evaluating a device, we look at:

Wavelength accuracy — does the device emit light within the clinically studied wavelength ranges? We verify this against the specifications used in published research.

Power output — is the energy density sufficient to be effective at the recommended usage distance and duration? Many consumer devices are too weak to deliver meaningful results.

Build quality — are the LEDs medical-grade? Will the device maintain consistent output over time? We assess component quality and construction standards.

Safety compliance — does the device meet the relevant safety standards for the UK market? We verify compliance documentation before listing any product.

OUR COMMITMENT

Science moves forward. New research is published regularly, and our understanding of light-based therapy continues to evolve. We are committed to staying current with the evidence and updating our product selection accordingly.

If future research raises concerns about any technology we sell, we will act on it. Our loyalty is to the evidence and to you, not to any single product.

If you have questions about the science behind any of our products, we welcome them. Contact us at hello@virtros.com and we will do our best to point you to the relevant research.
